Climate Smart Education: Empowering the Next Generation of Climate Leaders

Climate change is already affecting our communities, yet classroom learning often fails to connect students with these real-world challenges. Climate Smart Education bridges this gap by combining science with hands-on learning. Through interactive workshops, experiments, field observations, and collaborative activities, students explore climate issues such as heatwaves, biodiversity loss, water conservation, and sustainable urban planning while developing practical solutions for their own communities. Implemented in schools and educational institutions, the programme has already trained more than 300 students, equipping them with climate literacy, critical thinking, and leadership skills to become informed, climate-conscious citizens and future changemakers.

Kolkata Climate Fair: Where Every Art- Installation Tells a Climate Story

What if a walk down the street could change the way you think about climate change? The Climate Fair is an annual community-led initiative organised every Basanta (April) in Boral, South Kolkata, in collaboration with artist Samir Rana and his students from Aakriti School of Art. Transforming public streets into an open-air climate exhibition, the fair features interactive installations made entirely from eco-friendly, biodegradable materials. Some artworks are intentionally left unfinished, inviting visitors to contribute their own ideas and creativity, making them active participants rather than just spectators. Over the past four years, the initiative has attracted more than 5,000 visitors annually, fostering community involvement, inspiring meaningful conversations, and encouraging people to collectively reflect on and take ownership of climate action.

Climate laboratory at school

The Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest, faces increasing climate vulnerability due to frequent cyclones and environmental degradation. These natural disasters not only threaten livelihoods but also lead to long-term soil infertility, forcing communities to migrate. Similarly Purulia, Kochi, Gurugram Pune, and Bangalore - all these places are facing different threats due to climate change. Recognizing the urgent need for climate education and resilience, we aim to establish climate laboratories in schools to empower students with knowledge and tools to monitor and adapt to their changing environment.

Climate Communication in Bengali: Sabuj Prithibi Initiative

The urgency of climate change necessitates effective education and awareness to empower communities. Recognizing the lack of accessible information in Bengali, we launched Sobuj Prithibi in 2019, the first communication platform focused on climate change in the Bengali language. Our aim is to bridge the knowledge gap by translating scientific reports, creating educational materials, and fostering a connection between farmers and scientists. Through various initiatives, we address the pressing need for climate-resilient livelihoods and community engagement, ultimately aiming to enhance public understanding of climate issues.
